On Mastering Communication, take Some EQ classes Too

Deep in thoughts, I needed to make a $57 payment I did not have. Everything I had done so far professionally for the past few months was riding on being able to make that payment.

About 10 minutes ago, it was coffee break. While we bit on the snacks offered, I got talking with a lady standing next to me, she loved my work and wanted to test our web application. She got redirected to namecheap.com (which is my hosting company). I refreshed the page to be sure.

Oh my, I knew something was wrong. She said it must be an hosting issue, and I should go check asap, I knew it was not.

No boasting required, but @Namecheap has never failed me. I excused myself. I am a big fan, still till today!

Earlier in the day, I had spent hours talking to a client about not receiving her mails. We went back and forth sending each other mails until I asked her to let me look into the issue later in the day.

It came to me, I was due on that $57 hosting renewal payment I did not have at that moment 😭

Thinking about this, you can imagine how I felt when a friend who had seen my tweets and pictures about the ongoing #TechWomenAfrica 2018 Summit send me a message about my dress. I know her to not like how nonchalant I treat my wardrobe and fill it with Tees and Jeans.

Friend: Mary this your dress…I don’t even know what to say.

Me: Please leave me alone o. It’s the last thing I am concerned with right now! Am I wearing rag?

Friend: Why, I have left you.

Me: Thank you.

Let me just say one thing. This particular friend absolutely meant no harm. She is in the fashion business, and likes it when a lady dresses to fit the occasion. But I think most times, how we approach a conversation (personal or professional) should be one to be wary of, we all can benefit from taking an Emotional Intelligence Class sometimes.

I bet we are all guilty at one point or the other of talking before thinking, knowing we are is the beginning to mastering the art of communication. That is not to say, blurting out your thoughts as is, is a crime.

In my place, they say; Eyin ni oro, meaning words are like eggs, once it drops on the floor, its broken and cannot be put back in! You may want to think about that sometimes!

I mean I could also have responded with just a question asking what was wrong with it eh. She also could have pointed that out in a better way in her earlier remark too!
