Anansi’s flight into my hair: a true story.

True story, inspired by Tanya’s Post. My first encounter with one didn’t go down well with me, since then I have become watchful. Let me share with you briefly. I never made dreadlocks in my life, but my stylist persuaded me to try it one time which sadly has been the last, even though I loved it.

My postgraduate classes used to start by 7a.m., and even though I mostly lived off campus throughout my programme, I still got to class before my two other classmates who reside on campus. That faithful monday morning, we had our usual public relations and advertising class. I and my colleagues would take loads of selfies before our teacher came in. Just as he walked in, my friend and colleague, who was standing in front of me, chose that moment to sight a spider in my hair. Can you imagine what happened next?

That faithful morning, before I went crazy. Dug out this photo from my FB school album.
I went crazy, I flew up, and went berserk freeing my hair from its knots and scattering the heck out of it. Meanwhile I was screaming to ask if it has gone off, I heard a ‘No, I haven’t seen it fall off’ The rest is history. One thing I heard for sure, is my teacher flying out of the class while telling my friends to make sure they got it off before I got out of my dress, my blouse especially.

They did calm me down, insisting it had flown off too, and we asked our teacher waiting outside to come back in. Although I didn’t believe them, but I called down and spent the next hour and half looking at my watch. The next class was statistics, not a class to miss, but I risked it anyway. I called my stylist who was in another town, about 30mins away, she confirmed she had opened shop, off I went to get the dreadlocks off and a vigorous hair wash, told her a spider was lurking. My lovely friends were surprised I would miss a class. When I got back into my apartment later in the evening, I looked up into every corner and found some spiders. I got my bottle of sniper and insecticide, sprayed the heck out of my apartment and proceeded to go sleep in a friends apartment lest I get poisioned by the fumigation smell I just executed. Then I made a mental note to never let my bed touch the wall and to be watchful. Yes, watchful. Remembering that day still gives me the creeps 😨.

Have you got an #Anansi story to share? Tag us, we would love to read about it.

  1. Anansi graces my home, everywhere! When I find one crawling on the wall, I carefully collect it and put it outside…

None have gotten in my hair, but they do tend to drop down in front of my face to say “hello,” from time to time!

  2. I don’t know MJ. I say don’t let one incident stops you from trying again. Take it or leave, I guess I wasn’t the who lived that moment or haven’t experience such thing 🙂 , so I can’t really say. Oh well, at least you have a story to tell. 🙂

    1. Thanks Rommel, hmmm, I plan to try again, when my bed is located in the centre of my room, right after my hair grows long enough, because currently I sport a low cut, I shaved off my hair about two months ago, got tired of paying visits to the salon. Lol.

    1. They convinced me it had jumped off, although I didn’t believe. Felt like it was on my head throughout that class. Haha. Funny now, that day it wasn’t funny 😂😂 at least i came back in time for my afternoon class.

  4. I would have reacted in exactly the same way you did! As a matter of fact, the hairs on the back of my neck are standing up just from having read your story. (Which is not helping to convince my imagination that there *isn’t* a spider on me o_O)

    1. Wheeeew. Sorry about that dear. It took me almost a year to get rid of that thought too. While writing this last night, I kept looking at the wall and even moved my bed away from the way.
